Figurative Paintings

Mooney’s technique is that of the old masters, yet the paintings have a modern feel with contemporary settings, ambiance and boldness. His portraits play with light and dark as well as hard and soft edges to recreate the three dimensional image on canvas. Mooney’s brings out the uniqueness of each subject, seeking to capture both their soul and personality.

Subway Station. Oil on canvas, 36” x 48”

I used to live in New York City during the years I attended Parson’s School of Design, 1979-1983. I would commute essentially every day for four years from 77th St. to the 14th Street Union Square station near where Parson’s is located. Also, during the summer I had worked for Goldman Sachs in the Wall St. area. Ugh, that was a lot of commuting on the Interborough Rapid Transit, the IRT.

Christopher occasionally uses red and blue flood lights on his figures to give unusual reflections which heighten the subjects’ emotional undertones. His technique of underpainting mimics the old masters but he shifts to a more contemporary style through expressive brushstrokes.
